Attention homeowners & customers 5 things to know about hiring tradespeople

  1. Always ask tradespeople for a free ‘certificate of insurance’ for liability and workers’ comp insurance.
  2. You should not hire anyone who does not carry both of these policies.
  3. A workers' comp 'waiver' does not provide financial protection to you should a worker be seriously injured while working on your property.
  4. Properly licensed & insured tradesmen/women carry these policies and have no qualms about providing a free 'certificate of insurance' or 'COI'. The 'COI' is sent to you by the insurance agent at no charge to you or to the tradesperson.
  5. To protect you from fraud, the tradesperson can not under any circumstances provide the 'COI' directly to you. It must always come from the agent's office.
